Preserving for the future: Shell scripts, AoC, and more

Minetest Mapserver now supports mod Respawn places!

I absolutely adore project Minetest Mapserver. I have a pending PR for reading the current metadata for Mineclonia signs, but what matters even more is I have now written support for mod respawn.

I started out with vibecoding, and in the end, only 2 helper functions about small text parsing and some other small thing were left from the copyright expungement engines! I had written 90% of the code myself. Well, I found a great example of how to pass the contents of a file in the world directory as an http reply. And then I had to write the client-side code that requests that endpoint and parses it.

I remember the moment I got the rough parts connected and the basic pins appeared on the map (with dummy text) in the right spots, on the first time I even got to the web part. That was great! There were enough examples of parsing the x and z coordinates to get them on the map in the right spot the first time.

And now it's feature-complete: The server admin can enable respawn_places in the config file, restart the server, and then users can toggle the "Respawn Places" layer.
